Martina Maturana, age 12 felt something odd where she lives with her family on the archipelago Juan Fernandez, Chile. She mentioned it to her father who called the young girls grandfather to calm her down on the mainland. He confirmed Chile had suffered a massive earthquake. She then observed the boats moving strangely in the bay and colliding into each other. She ran to the town's square and started ringing a large bong to alert other inhabitants. She did not know the signals residents have in place for certain emergencies. Other residents began ringing bells and moved to high ground which saved hundreds of islanders before the tsunami hit a few minutes later.
